Plot Summary

Marjne Satrapi's three graphic novels have been published into one volume; The CompletePersepolis.
Persepolis is a graphic novel about Satrapi's life; growing up in Tehran, Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Told in comic strips, the reader follows her from childhood through to womanhood.
In the first and second book, the reader follows Satrapi as she struggles to understand the political climate in Iran, and as she learns about the political oposers in her family. We witness the fall of the Shah, her parents on-going participation in the demonstrations against the Shah, and we meet family friends and relatives who have been imprisoned for their political leanings.
In the third book, Satrapi is a teenager and is sent off to boarding school for high school in Vienna. We watch her face the trials of being a teenager, far from her home-land and away from her family.

Comments

The series of graphic novels by Marjane Satrapi not only describes in detail the political climate of Iran as she experienced it as a child, but it also tells the story of her transformation into adulthood.
Through the seriousness of her living situation, there are many moments in the book that reveal the humour of her views of the world. She was a s self-described "precocious child", and Satrapi depicts this with hillarious conversations with God.
Often heartbreaking, Satrapi embeds wisdom with humour. She captures the confusion, sense of fear and resentment that embody a tumultuous political climate. She is engaging, educational and endearing. Satrapi's tribulations; as she transforms into adulthood are similar to those of anyone from any culture.

While speaking to her grandmother, she offers Satrapi a word of advice:

"In life, you'll meet a lot of jerks. If they hurt you, tell yourself that it's because they're stupid. That will help keep you from reacting to their cruelty. Because there is nothing worse than bitterness and vengeance . . . always keep your dignity and be true to yourself".

This series is not solely about the politics of Iran, it is a book about transformation and about leaning about life through experiences.

I loved this series of graphic novels!!!
